BUSH JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OBSTRUCTS TESTIMONY OF CHINAGATE SCANDAL FIGURE JOHN HUANG

Justice Department Fails, Again, To Grant Limited Immunity To Huang For His Full and Complete Testimony

Huang “Takes the 5th” 147 Times And Is Held In Contempt An Additional 5 Times During Deposition By Judicial Watch

(Could Face Jail Time)

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and legally prosecutes government corruption and abuse, stated today that the Bush Justice Department prevented the full and complete testimony of former Commerce Department official and Chinagate Scandal figure John Huang, by deliberately withholding a grant of limited immunity for the purposes of obtaining Huang’s testimony concerning the Chinagate political campaign contribution scandal. Not coincidentally, Huang revealed during the deposition that he has made illegal contributions to Republicans, as well as Democrats. When asked if he contributed to George W. Bush’s various campaigns, he invoked the 5th Amendment.

Mr. Huang, who was deposed for the fifth time since October 1996, invoked his 5th Amendment rights 147 times during the four and on-half hour deposition. This adds to his previous total of nearly 2000 invocations. Magistrate Judge John Facciola found Huang’s refusal to answer questions legally contemptible on 5 occasions. This raises the total of contempt citations to 145.

Huang provided new information concerning political contributions he and his wife have made to various politicians. Huang estimated that he and his wife have contributed over $10,000.00 dollars to Congressman Dick Gephardt and between $5000.00 and $10,000.00 dollars to Senator Tom Daschle. When asked if the contributions came from foreign illegal sources, he invoked the 5th Amendment. Huang stated that he and his wife have received between 10 and 15 fundraising solicitations from the Republican National Committee in the last two years.

During the Clinton-Gore Administration, Judicial Watch sparked the campaign finance/Chinagate scandal when it uncovered notorious Chinese agent John Huang at the Commerce Department. Mr. Huang not only was involved in the illegal sale of trade mission seats for campaign contributions, but he also received over 150 national security briefings from the Central Intelligence Agency, which briefings it is believed he shared with his “handlers” of the Lippo Group and Chinese Intelligence Services. Judicial Watch is continuing to prosecute this and other Chinagate lawsuits to a just conclusion, and Mr. Huang has thus far been held in contempt over 145 times. If the contempt citations are sustained on appeal, Mr. Huang could face serious and substantial jail time.
