THE TWO FACES OF THE “BUSH BROTHERS’ ” CUBA POLICY

President and Florida Governor Repeatedly Mislead Cuban-Americans To Get Their Votes

(Miami, FL) While President George W. Bush and his little brother, Jeb, continue to talk tough regarding the Cuban embargo, they are looking the other way as nearly 300 American companies participate in an unprecedented food exhibition in Havana this week. Incredibly, the largest contingent–100 people representing 34 companies— is from Florida! (See Dozens of Fla. Firms Going To Cuba Expo). The “Bush Brothers’” behavior is similar to their conduct during the Elian Gonzalez saga, when they were silent to Janet Reno’s use of excessive force against Elian, his family and neighbors during the raid which returned the little boy to Communist Cuba.

The event, called the U.S. Food & Agribusiness Exhibition, is expected to generate $150 million in deals between U.S. agribusiness corporations and terrorist Dictator Fidel Castro over the next nine months. That’s in addition to the $140 million that Cuba has already spent since a change in U.S. law allowed Castro’s Communist government to purchase U.S. food commodities for “humanitarian” reasons and on a cash-only basis.

Last week in Washington D.C., Judicial Watch demanded license revocation, through a formal complaint, for this trade expo in a country, Cuba, that for years has appeared on the U.S. State Department list of terrorist nations. Not surprisingly, the plea was ignored by the Bush Administration, which has received large campaign contributions from many of the companies participating in the event. They include Illinois-based Archer Daniels Midland, Perdue Farms, Cargill, Hormel and Tyson Foods, among others. Actually, it was Archer Daniels Midland that last year became the first company to sell food directly from the U.S. to Cuba since 1963.

“The Bush Brothers’ hypocrisy on Cuba is clear-cut. In dealing with Communist Cuba they are behaving more like the Marx Brothers, and I don’t mean Groucho and Harpo, ” said Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman. “Fidel Castro is not only a Communist, he is the world’s oldest living terrorist and the Bush Brothers are allowing our companies to do business with him? ”
