"The Burden and Benefit of Illegal Immigration in the Washington, DC, Area: What Should Municipalities be doing to cope with the issue?"

Thursday, February 23, 2006 - 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM

The Washington Times Ballroom

3600 New York Avenue, NE

Washington, DC 20002

(Washington, DC)  Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, along with some of the area’s most influential business and civic leaders, will participate in a Citizen’s Forum on illegal immigration hosted by the Washington Times.

The Washington, DC, area is a leading destination of illegal immigrants.  This has an enormous impact on schools, medical systems, employers and many other entities – an impact that affects our daily lives.  The Forum will specifically discuss the impact of illegal immigration in the Washington area:  day labor sites, school overcrowding, employment, and residential zoning.  Also discussed will be the many positive influences that immigrants bring to the area, including cultural, economic and social factors.  The goal is to achieve a consensus on how our region might best cope with and harness the many consequences of a continuing flow of illegal immigrants to our area.

Ira Mellman of WTOP radio will serve as moderator.  Invited panelists are District Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton; Dr. Emilio T. Gonzalez, Director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service; Dennis D. Husch, Councilmember, Town of Herndon, Virginia; Steven Camarota, Director of Research for the Center for Immigration Studies; and Steven Hunt, Fairfax County School Board.  Each will present his or her unique perspective about the current impact of illegal immigration in the Washington Metropolitan Area, answer your questions and discuss any issues that you raise.

It is the goal of the Forum to send a clear signal to all citizens that an honest effort is being made to bring about positive change for everyone.

A continental breakfast will be provided beginning at 7:45 a.m.  Free parking is readily available.  RSVP is required.  Seating is limited.  Contact Brian Bauman, Citizens Forum Director at 202-636-4731 or citizensforum@washingtontimes.com
