MICHAEL BROWN'S CLAIM OF FIFTH AMENDMENT BEFORE HOUSE UNDERSCORES BOGUS PLEA BARGAIN BY RENO JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

JUDICIAL WATCH WILL INTERVENE TO OPPOSE MICHAEL BROWN CASE PLEA AGREEMENT

The House Government Reform & Oversight Committee has subpoenaed Michael Brown, son of the late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. Michael Brown was retained as a lawyer and board member by Norma and Gene Lum of Dynamic Energy (an Oklahoma company), and paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, even before he had passed the bar exam. Longstanding testimony by some of the other principals of Dynamic Energy allege that Michael Brown was used as a conduit to funnel illegal gratuities at the direction of Norma and Gene Lum to Ron Brown.

Previously, in proposing a plea agreement with Michael Brown, Janet Reno's Justice Department chose to ignore those serious allegations and instead has agreed to allow Michael Brown to plead to a misdemeanor. The Justice case was assigned to a district court judge whom Insight Magazine reported was a friend of the Brown family and who was recommended for appointment to the federal bench by Ron Brown himself. [See Insight, August 18, 1997, at pages 28-29).

Michael Brown's refusal to testify to the House Committee raises a strong inference that there is truth to the "bribery" allegations and that Janet Reno's plea agreement with Michael Brown is bogus. It is likely an attempt to sweep under the carpet the Ron Brown/illegal fundraising story.

Judicial Watch, the group that uncovered John Huang and the campaign finance scandal, will be filing briefs to oppose the Michael Brown plea agreement with the assigned court.
