An Open Letter From Judicial Watch To Tom Hanks
According to the Associated Press, it seems that you and President Clinton are still Bosom
Buddies, after all. That's too bad. The story of your second thoughts about donating to the
President's legal defense fund certainly made quite a Splash. We really thought you were ready to
be Big about this.
People who care about the rule of law and the future of this nation are Sleepless in Seattle -- and
much of the rest of the country, including The 'Burbs -- over the Clinton scandals. His
administration has been like a two-term Bachelor Party.
I know that you and the other Hollywood Volunteers think that you are Saving President Clinton.
But you and the rest of the Hollywood elite, particularly Barbra Streisand, are actually proving
the old adage, "stupid is as stupid does." In effect, you've said to the President, "we don't care
about That Thing You Do!" You're really in A League of Your Own.
When you first voiced your misgivings (which you've since retracted) about donating money to
the Clinton defense fund, you transmitted the signal, "Washington, we have a problem." As a
Philadelphia lawyer, I can tell you that your initial second thoughts were absolutely correct. The
law (5 U.S.C. 7353) prohibits any federal official, including the President, from soliciting,
accepting or benefitting from monies from private citizens - the President's legal defense fund is
an illegal operation. Perhaps you can explain the facts to your Hollywood friends before they
throw any more money onto this Bonfire of the Vanities.
Sincerely,
Larry Klayman
Chairman and General Counsel
Judicial Watch, Inc.
P.S. Wasn't it nice of me not to mention Joe Vs. the Volcano?
