Judicial Watch set to return Reno's punt on 'Chinagate'

Judicial Watch Will Continue Investigation Of The Most Serious Scandal In U.S. History, Even If A.G. Won’t

"December 7, 1998 -- Another Date That Will Live In Infamy"

Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman said that the public interest law firm would continue its investigation of "Chinagate," regardless of the Attorney General’s actions. Attorney General Janet Reno is expected to announce today that she will not appoint an independent counsel to probe President Clinton’s role in illegal campaign fund-raising.

"‘Chinagate’ is the most serious scandal facing this administration and one of the most serious in our nation’s history," Klayman said. "It’s no wonder that the Clinton Justice Department is refusing to investigate. At issue here are crimes of bribery and treason -- the selling-out of America’s national security for illegal campaign cash."

It was Judicial Watch that discovered former Commerce Department official and Clinton/Gore fund-raiser John Huang, sparking the "Chinagate" scandal. Last month, Judicial Watch filed a racketeering lawsuit aimed at uncovering the details of alleged influence peddling in exchange for the transfer of technology to the Chinese. The suit names as defendants Loral Space and Communications CEO Bernard Schwartz, President Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Huang, and a number of other figures implicated in the "Chinagate" scandal.

The Judicial Watch Interim Report contains key evidence on the "Chinagate"scandal. In the course of its investigation, Judicial Watch uncovered a witness, Nolanda Butler Hill, a close friend and confidante and business partner of late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. In addition to revealing that Brown implemented an illegal fund-raising operation to exchange trade mission seats for campaign donations, Hill’s testimony implicated the President, Vice President and First Lady in approving, organizing, and implementing the illegal scheme.

"Judicial Watch has uncovered solid evidence of Presidential high crimes and misdemeanors in the ‘Chinagate’ scandal," Klayman said. "In light of what we’ve turned up, Janet Reno’s refusal to act borders on the criminal. As a political appointee of the Clinton Administration she has absolutely no interest in pursuing this case. Judicial Watch will investigate ‘Chinagate’ and we will get to the truth and expose the guilty so that they may be brought to justice."
