CHUNG’S CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY CUT SHORT

ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR TWO DAYS

JUDICIAL WATCH TO PICK UP ON MAY 13, 1999 WHERE CONGRESS LEFT OFF

(May 12, Washington, DC)-- The testimony of Johnny Chung before the House Government Reform Committee had been scheduled for two days, May 11th and 12th, 1999. Indeed, Johnny Chung’s attorney, Brian Sun, had given this as a reason to the Magistrate Judge, in Judicial Watch’s Chinagate lawsuit against the Clinton Commerce Department, why Chung’s testimony could not be taken earlier during the week by the public interest group. However, without explanation, Congressmen failed to use their allotted time and asked only abbreviated questions of Mr. Chung yesterday. Indeed, only about one-half of the Committee bothered to show up.

"Judicial Watch has many questions to ask Mr. Chung about his involvement on trade missions to China, where it believes documents were created showing interaction between American high technology companies and Communist Chinese agents. In addition, Judicial Watch has uncontroverted evidence that seats on the Commerce Department trade missions, which are financed by U.S. taxpayers, were illegally sold by the Clinton Administration and Democratic National Committee (DNC) for campaign contributions. It is clear that the trade missions remain at the center of Chinagate, since they were likely a vehicle for China to lay the groundwork for huge transfers or theft of much of the U.S. high technology which we now know was compromised," stated Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman and President Tom Fitton.

When Judicial Watch takes depositions, it does not allow witnesses to read narrative statements. Accordingly, the responses to Judicial Watch’s questions will not be "rehearsed," as was apparent yesterday in Chung’s somewhat helpful Congressional testimony.

In addition to Johnny Chung, Judicial Watch has many more depositions planned in the weeks ahead, including past officials of the DNC, such as Marvin Rosen – who worked closely with John Huang and other Asian-American fundraisers. Judicial Watch continues to uncover documents concerning the DNC’s involvement in trade missions, which it has failed to produce to the Court, despite Court orders to do so. As Johnny Chung confirmed yesterday, the DNC is deeply involved in the Chinagate scandal. No matter how much the DNC seeks to blame others, it will be held accountable for its outrageous violation of law and its sellout of the interests of the American people to Communist China.
