STEALTH LOBBYING BY BUSH CAMPAIGN ADVISER SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED

Conservatives Must Uphold Ethical Standards

(Washington, D.C.) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes public corruption, called on Governor George W. Bush to separate from his presidential campaign Ralph Reed and his consulting group Century Strategies. Yesterday, Reed was forced to apologize for his group's stealth lobbying campaign on behalf of Microsoft within the Bush campaign.

Judicial Watch believes that the Clinton-Gore Justice Department's lawsuit against Microsoft is without merit and is politically motivated. Nevertheless, Governor Bush should provide assurances that his reported stand against the Clinton-Gore Justice Department's attacks on Microsoft is unrelated to Reed's admitted lobbying efforts.

"Ralph Reed should not have been lobbying behind the scenes for Microsoft within the Bush campaign. One cannot work for a political candidate while, at the same time, being paid to lobby that candidate by a private interest. And indeed Reed admitted to error in the lobbying campaign. Bush should have a zero tolerance policy for this type of activity," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
