JUDICIAL WATCH PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TAKES ON ADDED SIGNIFICANCE

Forum Only Opportunity for Third Party Candidates to Engage Gore and Bush

DATE: Friday, October 20, 2000
TIME: 8:00 p.m.
PLACE: Ronald Reagan Building - Amphitheater

(Washington, DC) With news yesterday that the Presidential Debate Commission has refused to allow third party candidates to participate in their debates - in violation of democratic principles - Judicial Watch’s Ethics in Government 2000 Presidential Debate, where all the candidates are invited, takes on added significance.

Thus far, all candidates - including Al Gore - have either confirmed or have stated that their written confirmation is on the way. Given that it would not look "good" if Governor George W. Bush did not appear, Judicial Watch fully expects his written acceptance as well. Interestingly, Al Gore accepted Judicial Watch’s invitation almost immediately, and it was reconfirmed on FOX News’ O’Reilly Factor by the press secretary of the Democratic National Committee that he would indeed attend.

"Judicial Watch, a public interest law firm which combats dishonesty in government, finds appalling the conduct of the Presidential Debate Commission, as it is not only elitist, it undermines the democratic principles of this great nation," stated Judicial Watch President and General Counsel Larry Klayman.

"All candidates on enough state ballots to theoretically win, deserve an opportunity to be heard. This will help educate the American people on the need for ethics in government," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
