PRESS CONFERENCE

STEWARDESS ANNE MARIE SMITH FILES CRIMINAL COMPLAINT AGAINST CALIFORNIA CONGRESSMAN GARY CONDIT

SMITH REPRESENTED BY JUDICIAL WATCH AND ATTORNEY JAMES ROBINSON

(Modesto, California) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government abuse and corruption and Attorney James Robinson, will file a criminal complaint on behalf of Anne Marie Smith against Congressman Gary Condit (D-CA) in Modesto court today. The basis for the complaint is Mr. Condit’s obstruction of justice in the investigation into the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy. In addition to Congressman Condit repeatedly lying to investigators regarding his relationship with Ms. Levy, Mr. Condit asked others to lie for him as well. Mr. Condit tried to coerce Anne Marie Smith into signing an affidavit denying that they had a nearly year-long sexual relationship.

“This type of abhorrent behavior should be condemned and Mr. Condit should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.

Date: Monday, August 27, 2001

Time: 10:30am Pacific Time

Place: Stanislaus County Superior Court
800 11th Street
Modesto, CA

The complaint will be filed by Ernie Norris, renowned former Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County and current Director of Judicial Monitoring Project for Judicial Watch’s Western Regional office and Jim Robinson, Attorney. Also present at the press conference will be Russell Verney, Director of Judicial Watch’s Southwestern Regional Office.
