GARY CONDIT UNFIT TO SERVE ON HOMELAND SECURITY SUBCOMMITTEE

TWO ADDITIONAL CALIFORNIA GRAND JURIES REQUESTED TO INVESTIGATE CONDIT’S ACTIONS

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, slammed today the appointment of Gary Condit to the House Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security. Judicial Watch also announced that it filed on Septemper 17, 2001 two additional requests for grand jury investigations in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. The requests were concerning Condit’s obstruction of justice and subornation of perjury with respect to Anne Marie Smith. Ms. Smith, who is also represented by Jim Robinson, was asked repeatedly to sign a false affidavit by Condit and his agents. California law allows citizens to bypass prosecutors and go directly to grand juries with complaints of criminal activity.

“In this time of national emergency, we can think of few worse to lead Congress’s fight against terrorism than Gary Condit, who has been implicated in the disappearance of a young intern. His lies and obstruction of justice make him unfit to hold public office, let alone a sensitive post on the Terrorism and Homeland Security Subcommittee. His presence on that committee is a threat to our nation’s security because of, among other things, the potential for blackmail. Perhaps a grand jury investigation will force Condit from this sensitive post,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.

“House Speaker Dennis Hastert and House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt should take immediate action to not only remove Condit from the Terrorism and Homeland Security Subcommittee, but remove him the equally sensitive House Intelligence Committee. Do the Speaker and the Minority Leader think that Gary Condit is qualified for this job?” asked Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
