(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, has learned, as described in a recent Associated Press report, that House Majority Whip Tom Delay and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) are selling meetings with Bush Administration officials for $20,000 contributions by donors. In a fundraising pitch to potential donors, Delay and the NRCC improperly offered:

I am asking you to serve as an honorary member of our [the NRCC’s]new Business Advisory Council. . . . As an honorary member, you will be invited to meetings with top Bush administration officials, where your opinions on issues like tax reform will be heard.

A Judicial Watch letter sent to Mr. Delay’s office asking that he cease and desist from this activity was met with a non-response, constituting an admission. Another letter from the NRCC confirms that the practice is occurring.

“It is improper and illegal to sell official public office for political campaign contributions. When Clinton did this, Judicial Watch acted. We cannot look the other way when Republicans do the same thing,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman. “Conservatives have to keep their own house in order if they are to have the moral authority to suggest to others what to do,” added Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

The Press conference announcing the legal action will take place at The National Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow Room, 14th & F Street, NW, Washington, DC on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 2:00 pm ET.
