ASHCROFT JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IGNORES CLINTON-ERA CRIMES Clinton Appointee, Mary Jo White, and Ashcroft Let Torricelli Off the Hook
Senator Robert Torricelli, under investigation for receiving thousands of dollars from a key contributor in exchange for political favors, got one last gift. Outgoing U.S. Attorney and Clinton appointee Mary Jo White announced she will not prosecute Senator Torricelli for bribery and other crimes. John Ashcroft’s Justice Department supports the decision.
“Mary Jo White’s decision not to prosecute Torricelli, despite overwhelming evidence, is corrupt to the core,” said JW Chairman Larry Klayman. “And for the Bush Justice Department to approve White’s decision shows it has abdicated any role in fighting government corruption.”
Eccentric New Jersey businessman David Chang says he gave Torricelli cash, suits, a Rolex watch, an expensive large-screen television and other gifts totaling more than $50,000 in exchange for political favors. Senator Torricelli has never denied receiving the gifts.
The matter is now before a Senate Ethics Committee, which is not expected to take action.
Bush Justice Department Slaps Loral on Wrist for Security Breach
What is the price to pay for espionage? About $14 million, according to the Bush Justice Department. That’s exactly how much Loral Space & Communications Ltd. will pay for leaking sensitive missile technology to the Communist Chinese. As part of the settlement reached with the Justice Department on January 9, Loral will not even have to admit to any charges against them.
According to a Reuter’s story, a House panel concluded that China was using U.S. built satellites to “steal data that could be used to fine-tune Red Army missile-firing capabilities.” A criminal investigation into Loral commenced when a Chinese missile carrying a Loral satellite crashed in 1996. The United States government, which would have had to “green light” the transfer, was caught by surprise.
Loral will lose about 4 cents per share as a result of its “plea bargain.” JW has a lawsuit in progress on behalf of Loral’s stockholders naming Loral CEO Bernard Shwarz as the defendant. Judge Royce C. Lamberth is the assigned judge.
