Communist Chinese Seek Control of Global Crossing, Enron

One of the firms picking through the remains of both Enron and Global Crossing is Hutchinson Whampoa, a Chinese company that currently operates a number of strategic ports (including the Panama Canal), along with utilities and telecommunications interests worldwide.

Judicial Watch members may recall in year 2000, Judicial Watch uncovered sensitive intelligence documents through a Freedom of Information Act request warning that Whampoa and its leader, Li Ka-shing, are closely tied to the Communist Chinese government. Despite these warnings, the Clinton Administration effectively relinquished control of the Canal to Whampoa and the Communist Chinese during the well-publicized transfer.

“Li Ka-shing’s growing empire could eventually cripple the United States and her allies,” warned JW Chairman Larry Klayman. “By simply shutting down public utilities and other key industries which it now controls, Whampoa could throw Western markets into turmoil, if not complete disaster, as well as have a detrimental impact on national security concerns.” Several years ago, Li Ka-shing joined with Global in a $1.2 billion joint venture to link Hong Kong to the U.S. by submarine fiber-optic cable to offer high-speed trans-Pacific network service for corporations.
