Bush Justice Ignores IRS Crimes

In his syndicated column, conservative journalist and television personality Robert Novak wrote that he was leaving church one Sunday when approached by a Bush Justice Department lawyer who said "I don't know what we are going to do with this Klayman [and Judicial Watch]," obviously referring to JW's legal actions against the Administration.

So far, it appears the Justice Department does know what it plans to do with Judicial Watch -- ignore the crimes of the former Clinton-Gore Administration and stonewall Judicial Watch's every attempt to achieve justice. Consider, for example, the politically motivated, unconstitutional audit of Judicial Watch on the part of Charles Rossotti and his Internal Revenue Service.

Rossotti, a Clinton holdover, committed criminal acts while serving as IRS Commissioner under Clinton, time and time again using his agency to batter Clinton’s political opponents, including Judicial Watch. This was the same offense that brought shame to Richard Nixon during the Watergate hearings. According to former IRS Commissioner Don Alexander, such politically motivated audits have been carried out by almost every administration. And yet, President Bush has inexplicably allowed Clinton-appointed Rossotti to maintain his post.

At the same time, the Justice Department has refused JW's requests to launch a criminal investigation of the IRS. Just days after President Bush took office, a hopeful JW Chairman Larry Klayman sought a meeting with Attorney General Aschroft to discuss IRS abuse. Rather than taking a serious look at JW’s formidable evidence, Ashcroft refused a meeting and instead passed the case on to a lower official who found that "a criminal investigation of this matter is not warranted."

"Obviously the Bush Administration has a vested interest in allowing the IRS to illegally target Judicial Watch," explained JW Chairman Larry Klayman. "As soon as the Administration realized we weren’t going to compromise our mission to hold every politician accountable regardless of party affiliation, it became in their best interest to get us out of the way. It will not work."

Renowned conservative columnist and CNN commentator, Bob Novak, wrote with obvious disappointment in his April 18th column entitled, Justice Turns a Blind Eye to IRS, that "Šnothing has changed during 15 months of Republican rule. Congress has not managed to conduct a real investigation of this serious problem for democracy, and now the Ashcroft Justice Department is begging off as well," leaving Judicial Watch as the only entity left to keep government open and honest.

We are extremely grateful to Mr. Novak and the many other influential conservatives who have rallied in Judicial Watch’s defense. With their support, and the continued support of JW’s generous donors, we will prevail in our efforts to achieve justice.
