JW Victory: Court Orders Justice Department to Release Terrorism Docs
Judicial Watch applauds the principle behind President Bush’s "You’re either with us or against us" stance on terrorism. Unfortunately, the Administration¹s policies have not always been consistent with this rhetoric, forcing Judicial Watch to take action.
Take, for example, Attorney General John Ashcroft’s contacts with representatives of the Holy Land Foundation, a fundraising front group for the radical HAMAS. Despite the fact that the Holy Land Foundation has been under investigation for its terrorist ties since 1996, the Attorney General met last fall, October 16, 2001, with George Salem, who is both a lawyer for the group and a major Republican donor and fundraiser.
Judicial Watch has sought documents pertaining to the meeting from the Justice and Treasury Departments since December 2001. When both agencies stonewalled, Judicial Watch was forced to file a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. On July 15, a federal court sided with Judicial Watch, forcing the Justice Department to release the documents.
"The Bush Administration must be made to understand that it is not above the law, particularly with respect to laws concerning disclosure of government documents," said JW President Tom Fitton. "Perhaps now we can finally get an answer to the question of whether or not individuals with terrorist ties can buy their way into a meeting with the Attorney General through campaign donations."
In another related story, JW expressed concern over the Administration’s decision to let FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III deliver the keynote address to another radical Muslim organization with terrorist ties, the American Muslim Council (AMC). AMC leaders have not only expressed its support for the radical Islamic.
