Bill Clinton to Testify to JW! Court Upholds JW’s Conspiracy Charge Against Former President in Browning Case
Judicial Watch has forced Bill Clinton back into trial court in its case on behalf of client Dolly Kyle Browning. An appeals court accepted Judicial Watch’s argument that Clinton should continue to face a conspiracy lawsuit for smearing Ms. Browning’s reputation and for blocking publication of her book, Purposes of the Heart.
"We have said since day one that we will continue to pursue the Clintons by every legal channel available until justice is done," said JW Chairman Larry Klayman. "With this ruling, Bill Clinton will have to answer in person for the financial and emotional damage he has caused Ms. Browning."
Discovery in this case (including oral testimony) will begin in 2003, with a first order of business being obtaining Clinton’s video-taped sworn testimony. One can be certain that the Clinton legal team of Williams & Connolly, known for its sleazy practice of law, will bring their full arsenal to this case. A major court hearing occurred on October 31, 2002.
Ms. Browning’s book, a semi-autobiographical novel, chronicled the 30-year relationship between herself and Bill Clinton. Through threats, intimidation and other misdeeds, Mr. Clinton undermined her attempts at publishing the book.
According to Judicial Watch’s complaint, Ms. Browning’s brother, allegedly at Clinton’s direction, told her via the phone, "If you cooperate with the media we will destroy you." Then Deputy White House Counsel and Clinton’s lawyer, Bruce Lindsey, also issued threats against Ms. Browning in an attempt to keep her quiet about her story. Former President Clinton admitted to the threats against Ms. Browning at their 30th high school reunion in 1994, and even apologized to her personally for them. Still, when Ms. Browning refused to back down, Clinton later lied about the reunion meeting and allegedly submitted a false written report on the event to Time for publication. He and his aides then, "intentionally and maliciously interfered with" the publication of Ms. Browning’s book by threatening potential publishers and orchestrating a scheme to defame Ms. Browning publicly.
After this smear campaign Ms. Browning could not find a publisher for her book, despite the fact that it had been forecasted by the publishing industry as a "bombshell" that could "knock Primary Colors" out of the headlines.
"By now, the American people are all-too-familiar with Clinton’s slash and burn brand of politics where perceived enemies of the Clintons are destroyed in order to protect their hold on power," said Larry Klayman. "Judicial Watch will take full advantage of the opportunity to question Mr. Clinton face to face and force him to answer for his crimes in a court of law."
Judicial Watch already earned one major victory against Clinton in its case on behalf of Kathleen Willey. For the first time in history, the court convicted a sitting president of committing a crime when it ruled that the former president violated Ms. Willey’s privacy rights. Judicial Watch looks forward to following up this court victory with another in its litigation on behalf of Ms. Browning.
