Passing the Torch
Torricelli Knocked Out of Senate for Ethics Violations. Is Hillary Next?

New Jersey Senator Robert Torricelli’s fall from grace was neither as swift nor as dramatic as the media portrayed it to be. It took years of hard work, multiple ethics complaints on the part of Judicial Watch and others, and the sheer persistence of whistleblower David Chang to bring justice to one of the Senate’s most corrupt members.

In exchange for taking gifts and bribes from Chang, Torricelli was forced to resign in disgrace from his election bid for another six years in the Senate. Judicial Watch will still pursue Torricelli through legal channels until all the facts of his misdeeds are uncovered. The Torricelli fall from grace has to have made one of the Senator’s close colleagues, Hillary Rodham Clinton, extremely nervous.

For while Torricelli peddled political favors for televisions and diamond earrings, Hillary settled for nothing less than $2 million in campaign contributions which, in clear violation of the law, she failed to report to the Federal Election Commission.

By now, the facts of this story may be familiar to you as they have been described in past issues of The JW Verdict. By way of quick review, Judicial Watch client Peter Paul funded and organized a star studded Hollywood gala in August 2000 to raise money for Hillary’s Senate campaign in exchange for certain business favors. While the Clintons kept the cash, they failed to report the campaign contributions as required by law. Now, he wants the Clintons brought to justice and his money returned to him.

While Mr. Paul has ample evidence to prove his case, thus far he has been denied that opportunity in a court of law as he currently awaits extradition for alleged stock fraud charges levied against him by the Bush Justice Department, which seems more interested in keeping him locked up than in going after Hillary for her crimes. Nevertheless, JW, Mr. Paul and the Ashcroft Justice Department will try to work together to move his case forward. In fact, on May 30 the FBI raided a storage facility containing property of Peter Paul and seized documents related to Hillary’s campaign for Senate. Armed with this new evidence, discussions surrounding Mr. Paul’s return are heating up.

"We’re trying to negotiate an arrangement with the Justice Department and we hope to have Mr. Paul back from Brazil soon," said JW President Tom Fitton. "It is important for JW's members to let Attorney General Ashcroft know that they expect a fair deal for Peter Paul and criminal prosecutions of Hillary and Bill Clinton."

Once back in the United States, Mr. Paul will finally have his day in court in hopes of delivering the same brand of justice to Hillary Clinton that Torricelli received only weeks ago. And then some. Judicial Watch will do everything in its power to help him do just that. JW does not support political parties and candidates. We care only that justice is served.
