Default Entered Against Iraq and Afghanistan in JW Suit
While the United States now points out that Saddam Hussein and Osama
bin Laden are allies, brought together by their common hatred of the
United States, Judicial Watch has made that case clear in its book
Fatal Neglect, and in a lawsuit against Iraq and Afghanistan on behalf
of a surviving spouse of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
On January 23, 2003, the U.S. District Court for the District of
Columbia entered a default against the Republic of Iraq and the
Emirate of Afghanistan when they failed to respond to JW’s
suit. The next step is to set a hearing to assess the damages owed.
The lawsuit was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Foreign
Sovereign Immunities Act.
In response to the recent arrest of Kahlid Shaikh Mohammed, bin
Laden’s third in command and a mastermind of the World Trade
Center bombings, Judicial Watch recently added him to the list of
defendants in its legal actions on behalf of its client. This latest
lawsuit was filed on March 3, 2003.
