AUTHOR JACK CASHILL First Strike: TWA Flight 800 and the Attack on America
Judicial Watch President Thomas Fitton: Today, we
have with us Jack Cashill, co-author of the book, First Strike:
TWA Flight 800 and the Attack on America, which alleges a massive
government cover up after TWA Flight 800 went down.
Jack Cashill: Yeah, thanks for having me on. My
honor.
Fitton: Let’s get to the crux of the issue.
What caused Flight 800 to blow up?
Cashill: Let me just recount that day for those
who may not remember. The Flight 800 explosion happened on July
17th, 1996, which just happens to be Iraq liberation day and the
high holy day in the revolutionary calendar. It was two days before
the Atlanta Olympics bombing. It was three weeks after a terrorist
attack in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 Americans. It was the morning
that a radical Islamic group, who claimed credit for the bombing
in Saudi Arabia, sent an extremely serious threat through traditional
channels warning of a major event, in fact, that evening. A spectacular
event. Here's what we know. On Flight US Air 217, which was passing
overhead perpendicular to [Flight] 800, two people on board remember
seeing something so specific and their memories are so clear, it's
almost hard to deny what they saw. One is a 25-year Navy man. He's
sitting on the right side of the plane and he sees a small private
plane coming right at [Flight] 217 at 21,000 feet. It misses...
Fifteen seconds later, he sees what appears to be a flare up on
the surface of the ocean and an explosion a second later. Before
that, however, another passenger on [Flight] 217 sees what we believe
to be the same plane at a lower altitude circling back around…
before it culminates in that explosion. Meanwhile, 270 people tell
the FBI that they saw at that same second what looked like flares
or fireworks coming up off the surface, zig-zagging out away from
the shore, arcing over and culminating in massive explosions. A
radar technician sees an object on their screen merging with Flight
800 a second before it disappeared from that screen. The government
comes back and tells those 270 people and the technician that what
they saw was an optical illusion.
Fitton: How are the smaller plane and missiles
related to TWA 800?
Cashill: Well, I got into this debate a little
bit late, but there were basically two camps within the military.
One camp said they figured it was a Naval accident, a practice gone
awry, and the other camp believed they were terrorist missiles.
As I looked at the evidence, I did not think there was the physical
evidence to support a terrorist missile at all. What we learned
after September 11th, and two military sources told us this, is
that we had been looking in the wrong direction. We should be looking
for terrorist planes. Well, we believe, and I would say with 100
percent confidence, that that plane was destroyed from the outside.
And everything I keep finding out confirms that it was U.S. Navy
missiles firing at and hitting a terrorist airplane and blowing
the crap out of it, but in close proximity to Flight 800. TWA Flight
800 was the collateral damage of that strike.
Fitton: What's the government explanation about
how the plane came down?
Cashill: Fuel tank problem, first time in the
75-year history of commercial aviation a plane just sort of self-destructed
because of a problematic fuel tank.
Fitton: And the fuel tank was empty at the time,
wasn't it?
Cashill: About 50 gallons of gas. And then they
said it was too hot, it was sitting on the runway air-conditioned.
In fact, these planes have sat on runways from Saudi Arabia.
Fitton: Why is the government covering it up?
Cashill: The government is too broad a term to
understand what happened that night. A more specific term is The
White House. This is July 17, 1996 and you guys know better than
anyone, for the previous 18 months, the President was involved in
a desperate effort to raise millions of dollars to convince the
people that he deserves one more term. He has no other goal. This
kind of an incident would have derailed this effort.
JW Chairman Larry Klayman: Jack, how do you explain,
and we've seen this in our public integrity and our public corruption
cases, the fact that the Bush administration has done nothing to
reveal what went on during the Clinton administration. Why is that?
Cashill: I get the sense, especially after September
11th, that the leaks we have gotten to aid our investigation have
been orchestrated. I think the Bush Justice Department wants us
to pursue this. People ask me, "Have you been hassled?"
No, not ever. I have not had a threat or anything.
Klayman: Yeah, I do believe they want you to pursue
it because they don't want to get their own hands dirty by it.
Cashill: Right. I mean, I wish they would.
Klayman: They never want to take on Clinton because
he’s got files on every one of them and they'll be destroyed
in the media.
Cashill: Right. They could, you know, turn their
guns on Bush, Senior.
Fitton: What does TWA Flight 800, the way it was
handled by the government, tell us about whether or not we should
be skeptical about what's going on right now, both at home and overseas?
Cashill: That’s a good question. I think
we're watching now the most honest reporter recording in world history.
That doesn't mean the truth will always be served, but we'll get
a closer portion of it. What happened on July 17, 1996, shouldn't
have happened because it was peacetime and I'm confident that if
we had told the truth on July 17th, 1996 there would not have been
September 11th, 2001. If we had been aware that yes, terrorists
were capable of using flying bombs to attack American citizens,
we would not have allowed September 11th to happen.
Klayman: You have a very fine reputation, Jack.
You're an Emmy award-winning writer and producer. And we thank you
for joining us.
