On January 25, 2003, former Enron executive Cliff Baxter was found
shot in the head in his car with a .38 pistol in his lap. While the
death was quickly called a suicide, crime scene photos and other information
were never made fully public as is the custom. Judicial Watch, therefore,
has asked a court to force a Harris County medical examiner to release
the information such that Judicial Watch can investigate the possibility
of foul play.
"The collapse of Enron and the death of Baxter raise questions,"
said JW Chairman Larry Klayman. "He was due to testify and we
can speculate it would have been information that those involved did
not want public."
According to the Houston Chronicle, an internal memo from Enron executive
Sherron Watkins to former CEO Ken Lay, described Baxter as an individual
"who complained mightily…about the inappropriateness"
of the company’s transactions with a corporate partner who helped
hide the company’s debt and inflate profits.
Baxter had resigned from Enron in May 2001. Judicial Watch is currently
examining toxicology reports while pushing on the legal front for
the release of the rest of the information.
