Bush Administration Honors Terrorist One Year, Arrests Him the Next

On June 28, 2002, Judicial Watch sharply criticized Bush FBI Director Robert Mueller for speaking at a luncheon hosted by Abdurahman Alamoudi, a man with known terrorist ties. Judicial Watch argued that this was, in effect, honoring a man who materially supports the murder of innocent Americans.

"The American Muslim Council (AMC) has been characterized by Mr. Mueller's spokesman as, 'the most mainstream Muslim group in the United States,'" Judicial Watch wrote in a June 28, 2002 press release. "In reality, the AMC's founder Abdurahman Alamoudi reportedly has close ties to U.S. designated terrorist and Deputy Political Bureau Chief of HAMAS, Musa Abu Marzook."

A little more than a year after Judicial Watch's warning, the Bush Justice Department arrested Alamoudi for illegally accepting money from Libya "to help persuade the United States to lift sanctions against that nation," according to the Washington Post. It is illegal in the United States to conduct business with Libya, and has been since that nation bombed an airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland. Six weeks ago, Almoudi attempted to smuggle hundreds of thousands of dollars to Syria. The purpose of the funds is as yet unknown.

"Hopefully, this will show the Bush Administration that it can't play politics with Islamic extremists, and that they ought to take Judicial Watch's word very seriously about consorting with supporters of terrorism," said JW President Tom Fitton. "Judicial Watch leads the way in exposing the terrorist financial infrastructure."
