Peter Paul Probe Moves Close to Hillary
Investigators Question Key Clinton Campaign Aide
According to the Los Angeles Times, federal investigators are closing in on one of Hillary Clinton's top campaign officials. David Rosen, the National Finance Director for Hillary's run for the U.S. Senate in 2000, is the focus of a probe into a Hollywood gala produced on behalf of Bill and Hillary Clinton in August 2000, the night before the Democratic National Convention. The event was funded by JW client Peter Paul to the tune of $1.9 million and brought in an additional $2 million to Hillary's campaign. Mr. Paul's contributions, however, were never reported to the Federal Election Commission, as required by law.
"This is a tremendous development in the effort to hold Hillary Clinton responsible for campaign fundraising fraud," said JW President Tom Fitton. "David Rosen was a key Clinton official responsible for overseeing the Hollywood fundraiser. He has intimate knowledge of the crimes committed."
Readers of the JW Verdict may remember that it was David Rosen who repeatedly promised to Mr. Paul on Hillary Clinton's behalf that he and Mrs. Clinton's U.S. Senate campaign would make sure Mr. Paul's contributions were reported to federal election authorities in a manner that complied with all applicable laws and regulations. Clinton and Rosen failed to do so, effectively placing Mr. Paul in serious legal jeopardy.
Rosen was also the key campaign aide who threatened Mr. Paul when the Stan Lee Media co-founder threatened to pull the plug on the event due to skyrocketing costs. According to a complaint filed by JW on behalf of Mr. Paul on October 14, 2003, "Rosen…told Plaintiff that if he backed out of the high profile fundraiser, which was then only days away, he would irreparably damage himself and his company, would be precluded from any further involvement with the President, and most assuredly would never work with President Clinton after he left office."
Judicial Watch's lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Paul, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleges fraud, conspiracy and unjust enrichment against Hillary Clinton, Rosen and others. Mr. Paul was recently extradited back to the United States from Brazil, where he languished in dangerous Brazilian jail cells for the last two years waiting for his chance at justice. Now that he is back in the United States, his case against Hillary Clinton can move forward.
SIDEBAR:
According to The Los Angeles Times, Judicial Watch's lawsuit on behalf of Peter Paul is being examined carefully by authorities in an attempt to help with the criminal investigation currently underway.
When Peter Paul complained about the rising costs of the Hollywood fundraiser, David Rosen told him not to discuss the mounting costs of the Hollywood Tribute fundraiser publicly, because Mrs. Clinton's U.S. Senate campaign did not want the true cost of the fundraiser to become known.
Under federal campaign finance laws and regulations, Mrs. Clinton's U.S. Senate campaign was required to file reports with the Federal Election Commission setting forth any and all contributions received by the campaign, including the "in kind" contributions made by Paul.
