Anti-Bush Book Misleads Public About Source of "Secret" Doc

To bolster their attack on President Bush's motivations for launching the war on Iraq, former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and author Ron Suskind publicly claim they have a Defense Department document that proves the Bush Pentagon was plotting regime change in Iraq long before September 11. There is only one problem with their story - the document is probably not from the Pentagon.

The document they have been misusing is entitled, Foreign Suitors for Iraq Oilfield Contracts. It was obtained by Judicial Watch in its case against Vice President Cheney's Energy Taskforce. Judicial Watch had posted the document, along with other materials relating to its case, on its Internet Site, www.judicialwatch.org, on July 17, 2003.

"The document has nothing to do with postwar Iraq," said Laurie Mylorie, a Defense Department consultant who follows Iraq, according to WorldNetDaily. "It was part of a study of global oil supplies."

According to press reports, O'Neill, who "resigned" from the Bush Administration for differences over economic policy, and Suskind have been using the document to undermine the President's credibility. By misrepresenting the truth about the source of the document, however, they have only served to undermine their own credibility.

SIDEBAR:

The document used by O'Neill and Suskind was produced by the Bush Administration in response to Judicial Watch's on-going efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in government on behalf of the American people. Judicial Watch aggressively pursues those goals by making public records requests and seeking access to public information concerning government operations.
