Two public college professors are suing Rhode Island’s governor to stop an executive order requiring all state contractors to check the immigration status of workers and state police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.
Represented by a nationally known civil rights group, the Rhode Island College teachers (Daniel Weisman and Ann Marie Mumm), whose salaries come from taxpayers, claim Governor Don Carcieri violated the state constitution and that he failed to hold a public hearing before signing the measure into law earlier this year.
Furthermore, the lawsuit points out that the federal database (E-Verify) used to check workers’ immigration status disproportionately identifies foreign-born employees as ineligible and that will encourage employers to discriminate against workers who appear foreign. Therefore, professor Weisman said, he opposes its use as a matter of public policy, particularly in light of its “discriminatory impact on naturalized citizens and other foreign-born workers.”
Similar local measures to curb illegal immigration have been legally challenged nationwide, with the high cost of litigation often forcing smaller municipalities to drop the laws all together. In many instances the ordinances have been defeated in court. Examples include Escondido California and Hazleton Pennsylvania. Others, such as Valley Park Missouri, Riverside New Jersey and Farmers Branch Texas, are still battling costly lawsuits.
Local governments that have successfully implemented laws to curb illegal immigration include Virginia’s Prince William County’s resolution to deny taxpayer-funded services to illegal aliens, Arizona’s stiff penalties for companies that hire illegal immigrants and Oklahoma’s measure denying illegal aliens state identification cards and public benefits.

How about the State Laws that were fought and won, like Oklahoma, Arizona, Mississippi, Missouri, Georgia and others. There is a clause in the immigration law that lets States and communities protect themselves against illegal immigration. Why ANYONE would want to protect ILLEGAL ALIENS is far beyond me. They are what they are, ILLEGAL ALIENS, for God's sake!
I believe the American taxpayers are fed up with the suckling of these ILLEGAL ALIENS. Just sucking us dry from the BILLIONS upon BILLIONS sent out of this Country every year, not to mention the BILLIONS upon BILLIONS the ILLEGAL ALIENS and their ANCHORS suck up every year. This must end now or we will soon be bankrupt and this beautiful Country will become a third world country.
How many ANCHOR BABIES did the American taxpayers pay for over the last 15-18 years? Would 6.2 million be in the ballpark? How many identities have been stolen by these ILLEGAL ALIENS? Would six million be in the ballpark? How many Americans have been killed by these ILLEGAL ALIENS? Would more than have died in the Iraq war be in the ballpark? Get the picture?

I have no problem if someone
I have no problem if someone wants to come into this country, as long as they do it LEGALLY. Our country is far better than what the illegals are used to in Mexico. I dont think that a lot of Americans understand how bad it is in Mexico. The government is ALMOST as strict as Cuba. I understand that the Mexicans want a better life for themselves and their children. But do it LEGALLY. A friend of mine is a border patrol agent. I hear all of the stories. It is actually pretty sad the conditions these people are willing to put themselves in, in order to get into this country. Doesnt this show how great our country is? Again, come in LEGALLY and i dont think we Americans would have such a problem with it.
Governor sued
Well, they should be charged with obstructing justice because even if you're not law enforcement, we have the right in this country to make a citizen's arrest when we see someone breaking the law. AND ILLEGALS ARE BREAKING OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS! Go GET'EM!!! Bury them under the prison floor. Couln't happen to nicer more traitorous people.
public educators and illegal aliens
These educators who work at most 6 hours a week, have plenty of time to do their mischief. It is funny they think that the real working people should pay taxes to support their ilk as well as illegals. More ivory tower bullshit and to think they have their paws in heads of our young. It is scary. Now they are forcing more cost by their irrelevant legal action! I bet they are in favor of tenure ( a guarantee for life for the inadequate and incompetent)
Carcieri lawsuit
Professors Mumm and Weisman are to be commended for their brave stand on behalf of those who need it. Governor Carcieri has brought very little in the way of new jobs or new business to Rhode Island, so he covers for his poor performance and that of his party by acting like the Bigot In Chief, much to the delight of the oligarchs and the deadbeat radio crowd. He would dearly love to have a chilling effect upon political dialogue as he dismantles state government even further while raising fees, particularly at the state colleges and university. None dare call them taxes, but, in fact, we are all being poorly used as our economy is destroyed by the arrogance of the ultraright and their political players--like this stereotype of a government-hating governor.

I forgot, people like you with this type of demeanor do not know how to think...If you would look at your back door, we as taxpayers of all states have paid for so called Americans born in U.S. who are too lazy to work and have relied on assistance for years...I am a Mexican American and I am proud of my culture but I am also a child of God...So think about this before the Lord takes you, He watches everything you say and do in this life and you will suffer the consequences at the end...Amen...

What a crock from "we are all God's children". Maybe you didn't notice, but we have NDNS (NDNS=native American Indians) that could use a few funds that illegals are taking away from us, plus all the 6th and 7th generation Mexican Americans who might want a little of what the illegals are getting. We have millions of black folk--6th or 7th generation folk who could use a little of what illegals take from our taxes every day. We have million of Asians, and black, brown, Asian and white folks from every place on earth who are legal citizens and who could certainly use a little of what we spend on illegal Latinos every single day. Get out of here with those charges of racism and xenophobia. This is our land and we never got to vote on our government giving it away to a bunch of legal or illegal immigrants.
What we have here in the USA is a full scale invasion of our sovereign nation by folks south of our border. To be sure there's an estimated half a million illegal east Indians--visa over stayers, and I'm sure some white folks--or why would the Irish govt. rep plead for amnesty for the Irish illegals here in the USA?
The proximate cause of the Latino invasion of the USA is overpopulation of Latino America. This is not our fault. It's God's fault, or maybe his representatives on earth--the ones who preach against birth control.
The Huns invaded when their land's carrying capacity went down. The Latinos (and others) invade us because their population exploded and there's no place for them to go or earn enough for their way-too-many-children to eat IN THEIR OWN LANDS. This is not our fault. We USA boomers didn't even produce enough kids to replace themselves. We wanted our country to be nice for our kids (nice=not so overpopulated that our water supplies would be adequate and our native species, etc. would not be extinct.
Our government unilaterally decided that we should be invaded by these immigrants, and it's time to kick both of them to the curb--our government
