JW’s Benghazi Work Cited in Congressional Letters Demanding Investigation

MAY 01, 2014

Besides making global headlines this week for uncovering smoking-gun Benghazi documents from the State Department, Judicial Watch is being cited in congressional letters demanding—once and for all—a full investigation of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack.

JW’s work on Benghazi has received worldwide attention in the last few months because it has forced the release of information that the Obama administration is trying to keep from the public. JW has gone to court and filed a number of public records requests to expose the truth. JW has also published two in-depth special reports on Benghazi, the last one on the first anniversary of the terrorist attack. Read the special reports here and here.

As the real story trickles out thanks in large part to our work, here’s what we know occurred for sure: On September 11, 2012 Islamic jihadists raided the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, the first diplomat to be killed overseas in decades, and three other Americans were murdered in the violent incident. The Obama administration has worked hard to keep details of the attack—and the negligence that led to it—from the American public and Congress hasn’t done much to get to the bottom of it.

Part of the scheme included concocting a bogus story linking the attack to a homemade anti-Muslim internet video. Delivered by former United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice, the preposterous explanation was orchestrated by the White House, according to the latest State Department documents obtained by JW as a result of a lawsuit. The files include a newly declassified electronic mail showing then White House Deputy Strategic Communications Adviser Ben Rhodes and other Obama administration officials masterminding a campaign to “reinforce” the president and portray the Benghazi terrorist attack as being “rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.”

When the emails were exchanged, both the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) already knew that the video played no role in the terrorist attack, so the administration deliberately lied to cover up the truth. JW had been trying to get the records since mid-October 2012 and was forced to sue in federal court. Among the White House personnel that received the memo were Press Secretary Jay Carney, Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer, National Security Council Director of Communications Erin Peltin and Senior Advisor and political strategist David Plouffe.

Incredibly, during a White House press briefing yesterday Carney had the audacity to say that the emails obtained by JW were not related to Benghazi! A network television reporter challenged the frazzled White House Press Secretary’s absurd version, but like a good team player he didn’t budge. ‘‘It was explicitly not about Benghazi,’’ Carney told journalists during his daily briefing at the White House. ‘‘It was about the overall situation in the region, the Muslim world, where you saw protests outside of embassy facilities across the region, including in Cairo, Sana’a, Khartoum and Tunis.’’

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina confirms the email ‘‘shows political operatives in the White House working to create a political narrative at odds with the facts.’’ Graham and two fellow senators quickly fired off a letter to the chairmen of the Senate and House committees with jurisdiction over the State Department demanding an investigation into the origin of the controversial Benghazi talking points. The letter, also signed by New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte and Arizona Senator John McCain, refers to JW’s “release of more than one hundred pages of emails from the White House.”

In another letter penned this week, Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf specifically mentions Judicial Watch’s Benghazi work to demand the installation of a bipartisan House Select Committee to thoroughly investigate the attack. Addressed to House Speaker John Boehner, the letter says that “it is now abundantly clear that senior White House staff were directly involved in coordinating the messaging in response to the Benghazi attacks and were actively working to tie the reason to the infamous Internet video, which they knew from the CIA and others was demonstrably false.  In short, the administration, specifically the White House, lied about a matter with direct bearing on U.S. national security in order to influence an electoral outcome.”

JW will continue investigating what really happened in Benghazi. Previously, JW obtained the first photos depicting the devastating aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. diplomatic and CIA facilities in Benghazi as well as details of the inexperienced foreign company hired to protect the American compound. The State Department paid the virtually unknown British firm $794,264 for nearly 50,000 guard hours, according to the federal contract obtained in the course of JW’s ongoing Benghazi probe. Earlier this year we obtained a Navy map that shows the U.S. military had a multitude of forces in the region surrounding Libya when terrorists attacked the Special Mission in Benghazi.

I really appreciate the work of Judicial Watch and Tom Fitton in the pursuit of the things that are wrong with our governance. All of you at Judicial Watch do a superbly honorable job protecting us from our own elected officials and their minions.

That being said, I do wish that an effort would be made to stop referring to Benghazi as the location of an American Consulate. It is and was not a consulate, nor an embassy, in any way. Benghazi was the site of a CIA operations center for the area. The news media refers to it as a consulate, even the clowns in the White House do so as well, and I find reference to the “Consulate at Benghazi” here as well.

Plain and simple, the building and offices at Benghazi were a CIA operations center. The Ambassadors at all our embassies and consulates works closely with the CIA in every country, so it is not surprising that the ambassador happened to be in the building at the time. Admittedly, the Obama administration has lied every which way it can about this, and the circumstances surrounding the lack of response by them is near treasonous. Worse have been the acts by the Obama White House since then. They have certainly been treasonous. And there is no excusing their actions no matter what the facility is or was.

But the fact that this was a CIA operations center explains a lot. If this was more clearly understood by the public, there would be fewer questions and rambling rumors about the reasons for the attack, and why the Marine guards were not available in the numbers they would normally be at an embassy or consulate, particularly in a troubled area like Libya that was in its last days of a civil war. The two Navy Seals who helped protect the Benghazi facility and were killed, were not members of the Navy at the time. They were ex-Seals who were then working as mercenaries, or contractors as they are referred to. They were camped a short distance from the CIA operations center, and they were not at any time inside the compound. They were completely taken by surprise and had to find and load their weapons before they could enter the fighting. It seems surprising that they were camped so close by, but had no surveillance, or anyone on watch at the time, so they had no idea about what was happening until well into the attack. Seals just don’t act that way, mercenaries or not.

Now that it has been learned by most reliable sources that the CIA was running military arms to Syria through the Benghazi station, it offers a much more likely reason for the attack. It isn’t as if the attackers woke up one morning and decided to attack the CIA station. It has been there for some time. But the attackers knew about the secret arms deals, no doubt arranged by the brilliant strategic minds in the Obama administration, and they did not like that being done in their own country. However, this fact in no way justifies or excuses the attack. But being that these attackers were fresh off the civil war, they were already battle-hardened fighters. So it’s not much of a leap to see how this happened and their rationale behind it.

There is still a lot about this event that is not understood, nor will it probably ever be. Emails and testimonies by the likes of Hillary Clinton and Jay Carney’s pressroom addresses are details of corruption after the fact, compared to the real circumstances leading up to the attack on the CIA station. A rich trove of information lies beneath the classified and redacted documents and the ordinary secrecy of intelligence agencies. I would hope this can be revealed. And the idiot video that the fools in the Obama administration initially blamed for the incident is an almost laughable excuse. People I know in the region said it was made by a Coptic Christian for the purpose of angering the Muslims, and it probably did. But they have been at each other’s throats for centuries. Nothing is new about this.

Keep up the fine work. And thank your for your continuing, relentless efforts.

Were they the passport company where obama’s passport was compromised? “Coincidentally” LQ Harris who ran a query on the pp was murdered as he sat in his car.

First. thank you Mr Fitton and Judicial watch for your excellent service. Been trying to follow you on all the issues you are involved with and I will continue to support you financially as best I can.

The Honorable Trey Gowdy once mentioned the docs they did receive were so redacted they were worthless, “our people were left there to die” and he also said; this was Congress’ job to be provided with emails that you obtained. I can understand his frustration in trying to get anything out of this admin is like pulling teeth. I try to watch the hearings on C-Span and it is just heartbreaking to think that our own government is so drunk on power that lives are just collateral damage and winning is the only thing that matters.

    Thanks again
