I am a teacher in N.C. I teach students who are limited in English. Some of them are illegal immigrants. In the morning, they proudly stand and pledge allegiance to the flag. They want to be acadmeically successful like any student of any cultural or ethnic background. Some of them, defying the odds placed upon them, learn English in TWO years (against all of the latest research which says it takes over 5 years to master acadmic language). They are very bright and ambitious students. They have dreams to use their God given intelligence and go onto college. They will have to pay TWICE the in state fee to do that. Many of them never make it that far academically or financially. The small amount that do are a great asset to our country. We have critical shortages of nurses, hospital technicians, mathamaticians and science majors. We could use their expertise here in the U.S.A. They will have to pay taxes to work and it will go into our social security system which dearly needs more funds. So what is so awful about them going to higher edcuation here?
