Re: Inquiry into Mississippi's Compliance with Section the National Voter Registration Act, U.S.C. 1973gg-6
Dear Mr. Secretary: are writing inquire into the adequacy Mississippi's compliance with Section the National Voter Registration Act ("NVRA"). you know, NVRA Section requires states maintain accurate lists eligible voters for use conducting federal elections. However, appears that your state may failing maintain accurate eligible voter lists.
Based our review of2012 data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission ("EAC''), appears there were more people registered vote than there were adults over the age living each the following counties: Walthall, Noxubee, Madison, Issaquena, Jefferson Davis, Sharkey, Grenada, Choctaw, Leake, Amite, Jasper, Lawrence, Smith, and Franklin. This raises concerns that registered voter lists Mississippi have n.ot
been properly maintained. you may know, under Section the NVRA states must "conduct general program that makes reasonable effort remove the names ineligible voters from the official lists eligible voters," including voters who become ineligible reason death change residence the registrant.2 Accordingly, ask you please respond this letter address the apparent problems with the above counties, well what additional steps Mississippi plans take ensure its voter rolls are current and accurate light the above information.
Section also requires states make available for public inspection "all records concerning the implementation programs and activities conducted for the purpose ensuring Mississippi, responsibility coordinate statewide NVRA Section compliance lies with the Secretary State's Office. See U.S.C. 1973gg-IO. U.S.C. 1973gg-6(a)(4).
