"How to Fight Corruption in Washington"

“Before Judicial Watch, there was very little that conservatives could do or were doing to hold our elected officials accountable for dishonesty.  And Lord knows there was plenty of it to go around.  Today I think the political system is far more careful because it knows of the watchdog role Judicial Watch plays in the process.” – Brent Bozell, President, Media Research Center

Judicial Watch cordially invites Washington’s summer interns to a special seminar entitled, “How to Fight Corruption in Washington,” Thursday, July 20, 2006 10:00 a.m.  This educational program will be provided free of charge and will feature Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch; Director of Litigation Paul Orfanedes; and Chris Farrell, Director of Investigations and Research, who will highlight the value of independent watchdog groups in the pursuit of transparency and accountability in government and the judiciary.

Judicial Watch was founded in 1994 with the mission of promoting and restoring ethics and morality in the United States government and legal systems.  As part of that mission Judicial Watch is a leader, with 600,000 supporters, in fighting for transparency, integrity and accountability in government, law and politics.

Event Synopsis:

Judicial Watch is committed to its motto “because no one is above the law,” and employs a three-pronged strategy to root out corruption in government and in the judicial system:

  1. Judicial Watch Fights Government Secrecy:  Judicial Watch is the nation’s leader in forcing the government to release documents into the public domain.  Judicial Watch uses open records requests, often made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), to gain access to information held in government files.
  2. Judicial Watch Battles Corruption in Court:  Through litigation Judicial Watch seeks to hold public officials and government agencies accountable through the courts.  Judicial Watch’s important legal actions include:  Judicial Watch’s lawsuit against Hillary Clinton for ordering the theft of private FBI files; Judicial Watch’s lawsuit against the Senate to stop unconstitutional judicial filibusters; Judicial Watch’s lawsuit against Vice President Cheney’s Energy Task Force, which made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and many more.
  3. Judicial Watch Counters Judicial Abuse:  Through our Judicial Financial Disclosure Reports project Judicial Watch has eased the once-burdensome task of collecting documents previously available only on paper and often only after a lengthy process.  By posting these documents on our website now citizens can look for potential conflicts of interest with the click of a mouse.

Attendees will learn about these and other effective tools to promote openness and transparency in government, while holding accountable government officials who abuse the public trust.
