DeLay allegedly funneled $190,000 in corporate contributions to his Texans for a Republican Majority to the Republican National Committee, which, days later, gave the money to GOP House candidates. DeLay has a poor ethical record and even if he beats these charges, he faces federal investigations into his relationship with lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon. Scanlon, a former DeLay aide, recently pled guilty to bribery charges. Abramoff has also pled guilty to crimes and there is a massive federal investigation into his relationship with not only DeLay, but at least half a dozen other congressmen and senators. (Click here for a useful history of DeLay’s ethical problems.) Conservatives and principled Republicans ought to look elsewhere for leadership.
In 2001, we filed complaints with the Justice Department against Tom DeLay for selling policy meetings with Bush officials in exchange for campaign contributions. In both cases, the Justice Department refused to investigate. Judicial Watch in October 2004 urged Tom Delay to resign from Congress.
