Corruption Chronicles

U.S. Border Agents Work For Mexican Smugglers

Corruption among federal officers guarding the U.S.-Mexico border is so rampant that the government created an internal web site devoted to recently convicted border agents and lie detector tests will be administered to ensure future applicants don’t already work for smuggling organizations.

A growing number of agents with the Homeland Security agency in charge of protecting the U.S. from terrorists, drugs and illegal immigrants are collaborating with Mexican smuggling operations to allow illegal immigrants, drugs, weapons and possibly terrorists into the country.

Mexican smugglers lure the federal officers with attractive women and lots of cash. In return, those hired to guard the border assure the safe passage of truckloads of illegal immigrants, drugs and other contraband into the United States. Some have even used their government-issued vehicles to shuttle illegal aliens from Mexico to safe houses north of the border.

Numerous border agents have been convicted for accepting bribes from Mexican smugglers in the last few years alone and investigations are pending against hundreds of others. This month alone, four agents were arrested in Arizona, Texas and California for helping smuggle illegal immigrants into the U.S.

Most of the corrupt employees worked at Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the nation’s largest law enforcement organization. CBP was created after the 2001 terrorist attacks to be the unified border agency by combining the inspectional and border forces of U.S. Customs, U.S. Immigration, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services and the U.S. Border Patrol. The idea was to create a powerful force that would effectively protect America’s borders.

Instead, the agency has been rocked by shameful scandals created by traitor agents on the take. Although the crisis is worst along the Mexican border, crooked officers have also been arrested for helping illegal immigrants enter the U.S. through airports. One recent case features an officer at a Florida airport charged with assisting a drug smuggling ring by tapping into sensitive federal databases.

The government’s most embarrassing case, however, features a Border Patrol agent named Oscar Ortiz who admitted smuggling 100 illegal immigrants into the country in his government vehicle. The punch line is that Ortiz was himself an illegal immigrant who used a false birth certificate to get his government job.
