Media Advisory: Judicial Watch Oral Argument to be Heard in MD Gerrymandering Case
SEPTEMBER 30, 2013
On September 13, 2013, Judicial Watch and MDPetitions.com filed a brief with the Maryland Court of Special Appeals in their case against Maryland Secretary of State John McDonough and the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Judicial Watch is seeking a re-vote on Question 5, a ballot referendum question put to voters on Maryland’s November 2012 ballot seeking to overturn the state’s gerrymandered congressional districts. The gerrymandered map undermines the accountability of Maryland’s congressional representatives to the voters by eliminating competitive congressional races and dividing communities to prevent unified opinions about representatives. As explained in the brief, the Maryland state defendants used misleading ballot language to deprive electors of an informed vote by concealing the fact that they were voting on these bizarrely-shaped and politically motivated congressional districts.
