FORMER ATTORNEY LYNNE STEWART RE-SENTENCED MANHATTAN FEDERAL
 

COURT TEN YEARS PRISON FOR TERRORISM-RELATED CRIMES
 
PREET BHARARA, the United States Attorney for the
Southern District New York, GEORGE VENIZELOS, the Special
Agent-in-Charge the New York Office the Federal Bureau
Investigation ("FBI"), and RAYMOND KELLY, the Police
Commissioner the City New York, announced that LYNNE
STEWART, 70, was sentenced today ten years prison for
aiding convicted terrorist SHEIK OMAR ABDEL RAHMAN's
communication from prison his terrorist group, the Islamic
Group. February 2005, STEWART and co-defendants AHMED ABDEL
SATTAR and MOHAMMED YOUSRY were found guilty all seven counts
against them including, STEWART, providing material
support conspiracy kill and kidnap individuals
foreign country, conspiracy defraud the United States, and
making false statements following nine-month jury trial
Manhattan federal court before U.S. District Judge JOHN
KOELTL. Judge KOELTL previously sentenced STEWART months prison. November 2009, the U.S. Court Appeals for the
Second Circuit affirmed all three defendants' convictions but
 directed that they re-sentenced.
 
According the superseding Indictment filed
Manhattan federal court and the evidence trial:
 
For over two years, STEWART, SATTAR, and YOUSRY acted the hub communications network that enabled convicted and
 imprisoned terrorist SHEIKH OMAR ABDEL RAHMAN perpetuate his
position the leader terrorist organization, the Islamic
Group, despite his conviction for seditious conspiracy wage
war urban terrorism against the United States. ABDEL RAHMAN
 was incarcerated and subject restrictions his
communications with the outside world known "Special
 
Administrative Measures," SAMs, but STEWART worked with SATTAR
and YOUSRY circumvent those restrictions, allowing ABDEL
RAHMAN continue provide leadership the Islamic Group.
 
STEWART was fully familiar with the Islamic Group and
ABDEL RAHMAN's role it, based her representation him
during and after the trial which was convicted planning blow buildings and tunnels New York City.
Notwithstanding her knowledge, STEWART, along with SATTAR and
YOUSRY, facilitated ABDEL RAHMAN's efforts continue lead

prison. the case ABDEL RAHMAN's withdrawal support for
the Islamic Group's cease-fire, his message was broadcast the
news media for dissemination around the world.
 
Mr. BHARARA praised the investigative work the FBI's
New York Joint Terrorism Task Force which principally consists agents the FBI and detectives the New York City Police
Department for their work the investigation this case.
Mr. BHARARA also thanked the United States Bureau Prisons for
 its assistance.
 
U.S. Attorney PREET BHARARA stated: "Lynne Stewart
broke the oath she swore attorney and now stands sentenced the system laws that she betrayed."
 
FBI New York Special Agent-in-Charge GEORGE VENIZELOS
stated: "Lynne Stewart, then attorney and officer the
court, assisted convicted terrorist communicating with his
followers, direct violation judicial order. Today's
sentence reflects the seriousness that offense. The FBI
 satisfied that this serves the interests justice."
 
Assistant United States Attorneys ANDREW DEMBER and
MICHAEL MAIMIN are charge the prosecution.
