California City A Sanctuary For Illegal Immigrants

While most municipalities are battling illegal immigration, one tiny Southern California City in Los Angeles County actually changed several laws to accommodate residents known to be in the country illegally.

Officials in Maywood, with a 96% Hispanic population of 29,000, proudly announced that they want to make their town a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants and to prove it the city council has passed legislation.

The city eliminated the police department’s traffic division after complaints that officers unfairly targeted illegal immigrants, got rid of sobriety checkpoints because the roundups nabbed mostly illegal immigrants and even rescinded a law prohibiting the erection of shade canopies because it was seen as a slap at undocumented residents who used them to create more living space.

Additionally, some in the community of rundown apartments, strip malls and factories want to name the city’s elementary school after former Mexican President Benito Juarez.

One blog wrote that Maywood highlights the dangerous practice of altering laws to cater to illegal immigrants and asked if it makes sense that the city council sacrifices the security of the entire city to placate the majority of illegal residents.
