U.S. Frees Terrorist Decades Early

An unrepentant terrorist who helped orchestrate more than 100 U.S. bombings as a member of a violent Puerto Rican extremist group has been quietly released from prison after serving less than half of his sentence.

Mum’s the word from Camp Obama but it’s likely that Attorney General Eric Holder was behind the abhorrent action. After all, Holder bypassed Justice Department procedures to push through Bill Clinton’s scandalous last-minute pardons and commutations, including those of 16 members of the same Puerto Rican terrorist group, known as Armed Forces of National Liberation or FALN for is Spanish acronym.

The recently freed FALN leader, Carlos Torres, served only 30 years of his 78-year sentence for his role in carrying out numerous attacks within the United States during the late 1970s and early ‘80s. The militant separatist group executed around 130 bombings of government and financial buildings in the nation’s capital, Chicago and New York, killing at least six people and injuring scores of others to protest the relationship between the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

After appearing on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List for three years during the 1970s, Torres was finally arrested in Evanston Illinois in 1980. Clinton refused to commute Torres’s sentence because he was identified as FALN’s leader, had publicly said that he was involved on a revolution against the United States and that his terrorist actions had been legitimate.

Upon his recent release from an Illinois federal prison, Torres was hailed as a hero and patriot in the Chicago neighborhood where he once worked as a community organizer. Supporters claim Torres is a political prisoner and a well-funded “human rights” group has for years lobbied the U.S. government for his release.

The son of a man murdered by a FALN bombing in 1975 points out that Torres was inexplicably released without divulging information that would have solved many of the unsolved FALN bombings, including the one that killed his dad. Furthermore, the orphaned son—now in his 30s—points out that his family was not consulted or informed about Torres’s release, in violation of the Victims Rights and Restitutions Act.
