DOJ takes rare step in Evanston reparations case

The U.S. Department of Justice took a rare step intervening in a lawsuit brought by foes of Evanston’s seven-year-old racial reparations program, a step that demonstrates DOJ’s effort to reinforce President Donald Trump’s positions on issues of race and gender.

The lawsuit challenging Evanston’s reparations program on constitutional grounds is the latest case involving the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to draw the administration’s attention and reflects a greater level of involvement than usual from the DOJ, according to an attorney with Judicial Watch, the conservative legal group that filed the suit.

“We welcome the United States joining us in this lawsuit,” said Michael Bekesha, a senior attorney with Judicial Watch, which filed the suit in May 2024 on behalf of several people who have hereditary ties to Evanston but are reportedly not Black, making them ineligible for reparations funds.
