State Department staff didn’t realize Clinton office records were ‘retired’

State Department employees searching for records responsive to various Freedom of Information Act requests overlooked thousands of documents because they didn’t realize some records had been “retired” to State archives and because they misunderstood the scope of some electronic files belonging to aides to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, government lawyers said in a court filing late Friday.

From Politico:

Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras ordered State to provide an explanation after the agency said it would be unable to meet a court-imposed deadline to turn over records to the conservative group Judicial Watch in a suit seeking details about possible conflicts-of-interest involving Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.
